For the recent past (as afr back as I know) our chapter has had a
mandatory service requirement. As the Executive Council, we are a
looking to change to a personal service contract wich each member signs
at the beginnign of the semester abotu what they feel they will be able
to accomplish in the coming semester. we are looking for feedback on
what other chapters who have contracts have doner, how they have worked,
what problems have been encountered, and any other issues that may be
pertinent.
One of the issues that we are tyring to deal with is that the egneral
assembly seems to want minimums set in the contracts, while we believe
that this conflicts with the ideals presented. Listed below is the idea
that we have. All comments are welcome, either private or back to the
list.

Service Contracts Motion
Motion:
The signing of a Personal Service Contract will be used to fulfill
the Service Requirement of the chapter.
Explanation:
Each brother at the beginning of the semester will be asked to sign
a contract to make personal commitments about what he/she feels
he/she will be able to accomplish for the fraternity during the
coming semester. These are to be personal commitments by each of
brothers with themselves. Each of the sections in the contract
should be designed to help the brother answer the question "What
can I do for the Fraternity?"
Since the signing of the contract fulfills the service requirement,
there will no punitive damages of any kind for failing to meet the
the goals stated in the contract.
These types of contractual options will be offered:
* Number of Service Hours or Projects to complete
* Number of Fund-raising Hours or Projects to complete
* Number of Committees to be Active In (including Hours Commitment)
* Number of Projects to Chair
* A Free Form Section to encompass items not listed
Possible contractual motivations should include:
* Contract Extension Recognition
* Hours Awards
Reasoning:
This is not an official part of the motion, but rather a section
appended to it to explain the reasoning behind the various sections
of the motion. Please take the time to read through this section
before questioning the main parts of the motion.
The goal of contracts is to allow brothers to commit to what they
think they will be most able to accomplish in the coming semester.
These types of contractual options will be offered:
* Number of Service Hours or Projects to complete
These are the two standard ways for tabulating the contribution
that a brother is making to the chapter's program of service.
* Number of Fund-raising Hours or Projects to complete
Similar to the previous section, this allows the brother to commit
to helping raise money to support the chapter's programs. This
section coudl be included with the previous one, but it's
separation makes it clear in the contract that fund-raising for
the chapter is always needed.
* Number of Committees to be Active In (including Hours Commitment)
A listing of the committes that a brother is interested in would
give the committee chairs an early idea of their support network.
Since each of the the committee commitments also asked for a
number of hours, a listing of committe meeting times and time
commitments expected should be posted.
* Number of Projects to Chair
This could go with the previous section, but, again, is separated
to emphasize that support is needed directly in this role.
Additionally, it will provide the Service VP with a list of
interested brothers from which to pull for project support.
* A Free Form Section to encompass items not listed
This section will encompass all items that were not already listed
that the brother feels he/she can make a commitment to, also
noting that commitment can come in many different shapes and
sizes. Some ideas for this include 1) pledging to clean up the
meeting room after the meeting and 2) bringing food to one meeting
during the semester.
Possible contractual motivations should include:
* Contract Extension Recognition
This would be an award to brothers who achieve more than what is
stated in his/her contractual obligation.
* Hours Awards
People who complete a specified number of hours (25/50/75/100,
etc) will receive some sort of attachment to wear behind their pin
to showcase this. Standards would come from the national level (or
at least based on what other chapters use).
