I appreciate your imput. Earle Herbert told me of the black issue when Zeta
first started the female issue in '71. From my memory of what he told me,
there was NO national bias toward black members - BUT some chapters in the
south DID NOT allow black members and the national office took action toward
these chapters. This was confirmed by ?Les (past national president, alumni
of Zeta at Stanford).
As per our discussions in '71, if the national was in violation of federal
law: it could take action before the convention vote. In my discussions with
Roger Sherwood, the national actually had started a legal defense fund for
this issue prior to the "76 convention. Zeta did initiate a female member
(B. Hesselmyer) prior to the change and was prepared (with Stanford Law
Professors input) to sue the organization if her membership was turned down.
This was done with Earle's support. The action of the '76 convention made
this mute.
I am sorry if 20 some years has made my memory slightly defective, but....

I as one Life member (and have the support from others with list growing) am
unable to support the national fraternity with funds as long as it practices
blatant discrimination.
