I'm sorry that there are Brothers that do not like the term "NIB,"
"NIBBLE," or other variations on this theme that refer to "Brothers that
have been just Initiated into the Fraternity,". My opinion is that a
chapter should be able to informally call the Ritual whatever they want
to -- as long as the ritual is performed properly and in accordance with
the official ritual of the Fraternity.
At EM, there was a time when "Brothers that have been just Initiated
into the Fraternity" were referred to a "NIBs." I think that a couple of
us picked that up from other chapters and brought it back. It stuck for
a little while, but I don't think is commonly used now...
Interpreted from the National Bylaws -
Pledge membership is conferred on students according to the official
ritual of the Fraternity.
(Article III, Sect 2 (1))
Pledges are Initiated into the National Fraternity, according to the
official ritual of the Fraternity.
(Art III, Sect 2 (2))
According to the National Pledging Standards, "An appropriate period of
pledging begins with the introduction of students into Alpha Phi Omega
only by the Official Pledge Ritual and their timely registration with
the National Office in the approved manner." (National Pledging
Standards 4)
I can find nothing in the official documentation of the Fraternity
indicating that a pledge may only be referred to as a "Pledge" and that
a non-initiated Pledge that has completed the approved membership
education program may only be referred to a a "Neophyte." Nor can I find
anything within the Fraternity documentation prohibiting the use of
"NIB" or its variations.
Am I missing some of the Fraternity documentation?? Perhaps individual
state and local law regarding Hazing has more to say on the topic.
