My chapter (Epsilon Lambda - Michigan Tech, UP of Michigan) requires 40 hours of
service divided up with a third to a half broken up into specific areas. This
is for pledging. Their is no requirement for actives. This allows us to make
sure that we only get people devoted to the 3 areas of service and not people
who would be what I call "less dedicated". Having no active requirement
underscores the "volunteer" aspect.
This may or may not work for you. We have an average chapter size of 28 and an
active campus size of 6,000. This means that almost everyone has some type of
responsibility. This system works for us. These are all my opinions of the
system by the way. PErsonally I think that you need to earn the right to be a
part of APO (MY OPINION - no flames please) and am glad that I had to pledge and
complete 40 hours of service and fulfill requirements. I would have probably
dropped out of the chapter without the bonds (service and social) that developed
while I was pledging.
As far as the service hours go....we are alwasy doing something every weekend
and sometimes during the week to so it is not hard to miss a few events and
still make it.
Okay, I have blabbed enough. You folks all have a great day and I'll catch ya
on the flip side,
