At Florida State, we've only required service hours from our active
members for the last three semesters. We usually have around 90 active
brothers, with 55 pledges per semester. It use to be "two chapter approved
service projects or be a member of a standing committee" but as of this
semester, we've increased it to "four service projects, 10 hours of
service, or two service projects and be a member of a standing
committee."

In previous semesters, brothers went to service projects, but there were
some that didn't. Even though we have an intense pledge semester with
many requirements, I guess it just didn't seem right that there would be
brothers who didn't do any service at all. The service requirement went
through with little debate, and our goal is to increase that requirement
to 20 hours of service, because 20 hours of service is the minimum that
FSU requires to have your volunteer hours posted on your permanent
transcript.

Our chapter is very involved both in friendship and service, but we want
to keep our focus on service and the principles that brought us together.
