Just recently, I copied my video of the 1992 National Convention, and had the
pleasure of watching some of the current fraternity section bigwigs make
cameos as young actives. Most of their only appearance on the video was
during the roll calls. Some notable faces as examples include the following:
Howard Wolf, former section 59 chair and fellowship recipient- see the recent
T+T- in his '92 roll call, he was a member of CWRU's new chapter, which had
been chartered 15 days before.
John Grossi, current section 94 chair, was briefly seen as a sophomore in WPI's
roll call.
I'm sure there were many others.
Now if those roll calls were combined into sections or regions, fat chance
I would've even seen most of these people, or friends of mine back then that
I'd be looking for. And a lot of the original creativity would've been lost.
Think you'll see 30-second step dancing demonstrations done on a section
level? You gotta appreciate the shows many of these chapters put on, and
there's a lot more to it than just "best chapter" of the region. At least
half the calls had some serious entertainment value. And the most important
thing is it involves as many people as possible.
Chages to this competition, if any, should only be done by voting by chapters
at nationals. I can tell you that many chapters out there put major heart
into this stuff and any autocratic decision by staff to cut down the
program may be met with some serious friction from them.
