Continuing on 1992, one thing I saw on that tape was an opening address on
the first night given by Earle Herbert, generally eulogizing Joe Scanlon and
other deceased figures of the fraternity. It's with irony and a bit of
surrealness almost as I was watching it, that I realize that Earle Herbert
died only 16 months later from a debilitating incurable illness that he
probably already had while he was at the podium that night. Even more ironic
was a segment preceding this speech which had Jerry Schroeder's opening remarks
on the convention, one of which was urging us to attend a seminar given by a
22-year-old UNH student afflicted with the same disease. That disease being
AIDS. In retrospect, I find the irony to be both sad and weird.
