Is there a provision for roll call in the bylaws or some other national
publication? It seems to me like roll call is just something that
happens at each conference even though there doesn't seem to be anything
regarding roll call in any national publication. In this situation, I
think that voting by chapters at a national convention at roll call
wouldn't be appropriate unless you want to amend the bylaws. I don't
even know what committee would consider such a motion.
Chapters can always opt out of roll call, as I did at Phoenix. True,
roll calls are fun, but not everyone has the guts to get up in front of
all those brothers.
I do think the current format can be rather limiting by allowing only
chapter groups to do roll calls. I think that if brothers would like to
do roll calls with groups other than their chapters, they should be
allowed to do so. Just have the brothers doing registration ask the
registering brothers with what group they'd be doing roll call, if
other than their chapter. I just wouldn't know how to go about making
the change.
I see merits to both sides of the issue. Yes, the roll call is usually a
chapter thing. It just takes so long at Nationals, even with the 30
second time limit! If we allow brothers the option of doing it with
other groups instead of just their chapters, we may actually decrease the
total length of roll call.
That's just my opinion.
