1) Changing "Men of" to "True to". I used to not care one way or the
other. These days I support the change. Personally, I don't have any
problem singing 'men of', but I have seen and heard of instances where
the toast song has hurt chapter recruiting. People (both men and women)
who have expressed an interest in pledging hear the song and based on
that decide we're an exclusive organization and don't stick around to
hear any explaination of what the song means to us. "True to" is a much
stronger statement about being part of APO than "Men of" is. Changing
the words to the Toast Song in no way infringes on the right of all-male
chapters to remain all-male. (I firmly believe that APO should honor the
promises made in 1976 and all-male chapters have the right to remain that
way.)
2) The third verse. I oppose this. Adding a third verse might make the
song more reflective of the fraternities history, but 1) it doesn't undo
the public relations damage done by "Men of" in the first two verses and
2) it makes the song too long. If it takes too long to sing the whole
toast song, people will stop singing it as often, or at least not sing
the whole thing every time they sing it, and nothing will have been
gained. As it is, I've been involved in a number of events where the
group decided to sing just the first verse due to time issues.
