Hello,
Last week, I posted a message in rec.scouting asking whether other somewhat
scouting-like student societies existed outside Delft, Holland. As far as we
at the Delftsche Zwervers ("Delft Rovers") knew, that was not the case.
In that newsgroup, Randy Finder made me aware of the existence of
Alpha Phi Omega. We had some discussions about the differences between
APO and DZ and discovered that there are more similarities than
differences at the base. First, I'll describe the Zwervers without much
detail, then I'll tell something about myself (I'll try to keep it short).
The Delftsche Zwervers were founded in 1920 by some former scouts who were
going to study in Delft. This was a response to the founding of the Rover
groups in England. The group was part of Scouting Netherlands (and still is).
About 1970 the group moved to its current location, one of the towers,
built before 1700, where the Netherlands stored their gun powder.
In 1994, the group/society has 32 members and is the smallest (general)
student society in Delft. The membership is mixed between boys and girls,
homo, hetero and bisexuals, former scouts (about 35%) and non-scouts (65%?),
etcetera. The main principle is that everybody should be him/herself.
Our main activities are:
* Organizing three children's summer camps for schools meant for children with
severe learning difficulties from one of the poorer quarters of The Hague,
the Schilderswijk.
* Meeting every thursday evening to eat together and then engage in an activity,
varying from inviting some Hare Krishna (sp?), getting more information about
New Zealand, Yoga, Emancipation or Bats, being creative (Dance, Brainstorm,
Painting Easter Eggs (Yuck)), being active (try Waterpolo, Ultimate Frisbee,
Acrobatics), etcetera.
* Engaging in social activities, both on a personal basis and as a group, like
collecting money for cancer research, helping the yearly Delft Street Theatre
Festival, helping a Service Club with organizing a fundraising night, chopping
excess branches from willows (there must me a word for it), etc.
* Gossiping about every other member.
* * * * * *
Now I'll introduce myself. My name is Johan Meijdam (look at the eij in my last
name as a ey). I'm a student at Delft University of Technology, department of
Applied Mathematics. My final work overhere will be on task graphs in
parallel computers. I am 23 years young and a member of the Delftsche Zwervers
(you probably guessed that already). Thursday next week (October 13), I hope
to become Chairman/President/Praeses/Whatever-you-call-it-it-is-only-the-
function-that-matters-in-my-opinion. I live in a student house here in the
University quarter, but it cannot be called a campus (the students are
scattered all over Delft). My favorite activity (when I'm not busy with
my study or the Zwervers) is playing games (chess, strategy, roleplaying,
magic, ordinary card games, etc.) and reading fantasy books.
I think this is enough for now,
Yours,
Johan Meijdam
