Liz, you're right, there is a better way. The US Post Office offers
bulk rates for any mailing of over 200 identical pieces. Although the
National Office has a permit, anyone can get a permit. If you are a non
profit organization, and APO is, you will get a bigger discount.

Since you go to Indiana University, I would be surprized if your school
doesn't already have one. As an organization affiliated with the
school, you may be able to use it (paying for the appropriate postage).
Contact someone in whatever office oversees student organizations (at
Central Michigan University, it was the Office of Student Life). If you
plan to mail to lots of people, getting your own permit isn't real
expensive (break even point for the first year is about 1300 pieces for
a non profit organization; after the first year, you save money after
about 700 pieces).

Having researched this while I was Corresponding Secretary for my
chapter, I have written info on bulk rate and maintainging alumni
addresses. I have info on getting and maintaing addresses, bulk rate
mail (including bar coding and Zip+4), supplies, software, and other
hints. I have posted this to APO-L on several occasions over the last 2
years, although at about 10K, I decided not to post it again. However,
I have uploaded it to the wpi.wpi.edu FTP site (in the directory
/clubs/AphiO/incoming watch the capitalization and make sure your FTP
program does as well). The file is called alumni.inf and can be freely
distributed. When I tried, I couldn't get into Rick Nyman's site at
Virgina Tech, but I will try again in the morning and announce when it
is there.

If you are unable to get the file, either because you do not have/know
how to use FTP, e-mail me and I can send out a copy via e-mail.
