I understand the feeling for term limits as there are some brothers that have
been in office a long time. At times I even feel that way about sectional
chairs, although we still have some sections without one according to the
last list that came out.
My definition of leadership not only means to lead but to train and give other
s the opportunity to lead. It has always been my intention to step aside as
soon as someone who was trained and had a job stayed in the state of
Arkansas. My vice chair who was the first qualified person to stay in Arkansa
s died of cancer this spring. He was only 25. I have new people in line and
intend to step aside before too long.
Some people who make great leader need a little push. Some will not make
waves. And there are those that will never try if they don't see anyplace to
advance.
The fraternity loses too many people because they either are not challenged
or do not see a place for themselves that rewards them in their own minds
enough to stay. It boggles the mind to think that if someone was in office
for a long time, that they would not have thought to look around for someone
to train. After all, people do die and sometimes when you least expect it.
I of all people know that too well.
Overall, I believe some sort of term limits are probably good for board
members, but as far as what time limits for what office, I haven't got a clue
as to what would be best.
