I got this and really liked. Of course, I'm a democrat :-) I encourage the
republicans on the list to post their own agenda...

The Daily Briefing -- Tuesday, October 18, 1994

                  WHY AMERICANS SHOULD VOTE DEMOCRATIC

ISSUE
REPUBLICANS WANT TO TAKE US BACK
DEMOCRATS WANT TO CONTINUE MOVING FORWARD

CRIME Although the American people say that crime is the number one issue
in America, this year's crime bill was opposed by 76% of Republicans in
the House and Senate. Heeding the call of the special interests, GOP
Senators filibustered the bill, but failed to stop passage. Democrats
passed the toughest crime bill in history. The bill puts 100,000 more
cops on the street, expands the death penalty, makes "three strikes" the
law of the land, builds more prisons and bans 19 types of assault weapons.

THE BRADY BILL Even though firearm-related deaths are the second fastest
growing cause of premature death, 68% of Republicans in the House and
Senate voted against the Brady Bill in 1993. Before voting "no," GOP
Senators filibustered the bill. Democrats enacted Brady into law. During
the first 100 days of the Brady Law, more than 5% of all individuals
trying to purchase handguns were denied guns because of background checks.

ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN 78% of House Republicans voted against the assault
weapons ban (H.R. 4296) and 77% of Senate Republicans voted against
legislation banning assault weapons (a Feinstein amendment to S. 1607).
Democrats passed the assault weapon ban that prohibits the purchase,
manufacture and sale of 19 types of assault weapons -- weapons of war
being used on America's streets.

JOB GROWTH Republicans made dire predictions about the President's
economic plan. "This bill ... is a jobs killer" (Sen. Chaffee). "This
bill will cost America jobs" (Sen. Mack). "I do not think it takes a
rocket scientist to know this bill will cost jobs" (Sen. G rassley).
"...[I]t's our bet that this is a job killer..." (Rep. Kasich). Not one
Republican voted for the President's economic plan. Jobs are up. Under
President Clinton, over four million private sector jobs have been created
-- 211,000 per month.

UNEMPLOYMENT TO REEMPLOYMENT Republicans claimed that the economic plan
would increase unemployment. "...[U]nemployment will be up..." (Sen.
Packwood). There's steady reemployment. The September 1994 unemployment
rate hit a four-year low -- down to 5.9% from 7.7% in January of 1993 (new
methodology).

BUDGET DEFICIT 100% of Republicans -- every single Republican in Congress
- - voted against the largest deficit reduction package in history. The
recently proposed Republican "Contract with America," does not list one
specific spending cut and puts the budget one trill ion dollars in the
hole. Democrats passed the largest deficit reduction plan in history that
cuts the deficit in half. The plan reduces the deficit by more than $500
billion over five years. And the strength of the economy has increased
overall deficit reduction to nearly $700 billion. After growing for
years, the deficit is now projected to go down three years in a row -- for
the first time since Harry Truman was in the White House.

TAX FAIRNESS Republicans support tax breaks for the rich. Not one
Republican voted for the President's economic plan to restore tax
fairness. The Republican "Contract with America" cuts capital gains and
estate taxes for the well-off while gutting Medicare and Social
Security. Their "contract" gives more than $110 billion in tax breaks to
the rich while the average taxpayer gets a little more than $4 a month.
Because of Democrats, tax fairness has begun. Under the deficit reduction
plan, 98.8% of Americans pay the same or less in income taxes. The
wealthiest 1.2% -- those who benefitted from tax breaks throughout the
1980s and who earn more than $180,000 -- pay their fair share.

TAX CUTS FOR WORKING FAMILIES Not one Republican voted for the Earned
Income Tax Credit (EITC) expansion in the President's budget. And, 70% of
House Republicans voted for a 1993 budget proposal that would have
eliminated the expanded EITC (a Kasich amendment). Because of Democrats,
15 million working families get a tax cut from the expanded Earned Income
Tax Credit. The expanded EITC guarantees that no child whose parents work
full-time will have to grow up in poverty.

FAMILY AND MEDICAL LEAVE In 1993, 74% of the Republicans in Congress voted
against Family and Medical Leave. GOP Senators tried to block it with a
filibuster. Democrats enacted the Family and Medical Leave Law. 44
million workers are protected.

MOTOR VOTER In 1993, 88% of Republicans in the House and Senate voted
against Motor Voter. GOP Senators filibustered the bill. Because of
Democrats, Motor Voter is now law. Percentage of registered voters
expected to climb to 90%.

NATIONAL SERVICE In 1993, 85% of Republicans in Congress voted against
National Service. And GOP Senators filibustered the legislation. Because
of Democrats, National Service was enacted into law. Students who want to
contribute to their communities through public service can receive college
tuition assistance. In the next three years, 100,000 Americans will
participate in National Ser vice's grassroots program, AmeriCorps.

STUDENT LOAN REFORM Even though the cost of a public college education
more than doubled from 1980 to 1992, 100% of Congressional Republicans
(175 of 175 House members and 44 of 44 Senators) voted against the
President's economic package -- including the Student Loan Reform Act.
Because of Democrats, Student Loan Reform enacted into law. Now, 20
million students are eligible for low-interest rate loans and better
repayment terms.
