I'm not here to debate BSA's policies and whether or not they are right
or wrong... I suppose that is up to the current active membership in
that organzation to decide, although I definite have an opinion
{hmmm... I seem to have an opinion on just about everything} I will
not discuss that in this unappropriate forum.
I would, however, like to keep good/great relations with the boy scouts
and build greater relations with the girl scouts --- at least on the
local level. As a chartering member, I can firmly attest to the
excellent recruiting ground that the BSA offers for both advisors and
members... Our efforts with the girls scouts have not been as
wonderful, but we are still working on that. I know it helps to find
Eagles (& others involved with BSA) and say I'm starting this co-ed
service fraternity that was founded under the principles of scouting:-)
It certainly gets us off on the right foot and then I can go from
there.
As far as the homosexual issue, I'm not sure if I'll fight for __YOUR__
RIGHT to feel the way you do... perhaps it would be more appropriate to
say I'll fight for __YOUR__ ignorance, but I'm going to do what I can
to educate you. Kim Harris stated my viewpoints on this issue quite
eloquently so I won't bother repeating her (tx!).
And does this relate to Alpha Phi Omega? Oh yea! At least at Oklahoma
State University it does. We have a few homosexual petitioning
members... ahhh, how could we... And I am absolutely positive that we
lost at least 4 potential members because of this. I guess they
decided to stay out of other people business.... and have respect. Oh
fiddlesticks! I am, personally, disappointed to see them leave cause I
think they could have learned alot about the interaction. Some of our
most active members are gay.
How on earth do we educate the ignorant? I guess one at a time! I
hope we don't loose too many potential brothers cause of such
ignorance. I also hope to help create a chapter that is loving &
accepting of all. I still think Alpha Phi Omega can be for everyone...
Take Care,
Liston
