Because DormCon does support FSILG rush. We like the diversity of the sys=
tem,
both within the dorms and the FSILGs. We wish that they had never done F=
OC.
But they did. Since I've been here, students have been united on having F=
SILG
rush go well. The IFC was pretty on top of your rush so there wasn't a wa=
y that
DormCon could help out in planning it. When it came to the actual rush t=
ime,
there were posters in dorms and dorm folks were told to encourage the fre=
shmen
to look around. Not only is it best for the freshmen to find where they =
are
happiest, but it's good for the dorm system to have people move out (i.e.=
 no
crowding). So even if you look at us only being selfish, we still want y=
our
system to succeed. Our two systems used to be mostly decoupled, but they=
 are
now far more linked. If we want to get stuff done, it is best done as a =
united
front.

Dorm rush is one of the best campus wide community events. I think it's =
sad
that it was so winnowed down this year. The admins seem to think of it o=
nly as
a way to choose housing (and we're partially at fault for that because we=

emphasize that a lot), but it's so much more than that. We fight for it
because it is FUN and it's one of the things that actually does build
community. I was in a book store the other day and flipped through the c=
ollege
guides. In one of them, the top three events at MIT were listed as senio=
r
week, spring weekend, and R/O week. It is a campus-wide community event =
and
for as much lip service as they pay to wanting that, they largely cancel =
one of
the major events that does bring out the community. I want the fun back. =
I want
a time before classes that everyone can hang out, relax, see people again=
 after
the summer, and welcome the new students. =
