(from a crusty alum: )
as a veteran of some MIT instutitionalizing in my day, including some student
life stuff, here are a few observations and a few suggestions.
observations:
*this idea (of having a cheap(er) T pass available to more people)
seems to have
some resonance.
*nobody likes "mandatory" programs
*folks are miffed they hear about student life decisions after they are made
*undergrad folks are miffed grad students aren't talking to undergrads
*folks are miffled that the tech implies things that aren't true
suggestions:
*if you want a subsidized T pass now, go get one -
http://web.mit.edu/facilities/transportation/tpass/ has more info. (a
bus pass
is $12/month, vs. $31 if you bought it from the MBTA, subway is $22 vs
the $44 i
pay)
*if you're unhappy about the way things are going, hold people
accountable. "people" in this case could be: the tech, the GSC, the
UA, the dean of student
life. emaing mit-talk/ec-discuss etc is a good start. email the people
directly. ask them the real story.
*get up and do something. unhappy with the accuracy of tech articles?
go write
one. unhappy that the GSC and the UA aren't talking? be the liaison. as
anyone knows who has tried to get something accomplished in the HUGE
administrivia that is any large organization, it is HARD work, and not as easy
as you'd think on paper. you have to be persistent, and you have to be
patient. and you can't expect that those who are already overworked and
underappreciated are going to just do "the right thing" automatically.
*get other people talking/interested. bring it up at lunch. at
dinner. when
you're tooling that problem set with some friends from class. during IM
sports. "did you read that article about $10 T passes? would you care if it
was mandatory? wanna read a letter i wrote to the editor about it?"
passion is a good thing. let that feeling that inspired you to write an email
inspire you to change things even further.
best of luck,
-Sarah McDougal, '01
