State Government Agency Will Use Datakey Smart Cards
MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Datakey, Inc. (Nasdaq: DKEY), a
Minneapolis-based provider of information security systems, announced the
receipt of an initial order of 1,000 SignaSURE smart cards for a state
government agency digital signature application. A complementary order for
additional SignaSURE products is expected to follow this smart card order
shortly.
The state government agency will become a Channel Certification
Authority(TM) and will contract ID Certify, a Seattle-based certificate
authority, to manage their Public Key Infrastructure. The state will
implement ID Certify's complete Certification Authority infrastructure and
will use their services to train certificate registration agents, create
certificates, issue and personalize smart cards, and store the certificates
in the ID Certify repository.
The Datakey smart card stores digital certificates, generates the
public key pair used for the digital signature and performs the digital
signature function. Utilization of the Datakey smart card provides true
digital signature non-repudiation and portability of digital credentials.
"This is one of the states that is leading the country with progressive
strides in electronic trade technology. We are excited to be a part of this
landmark step," said Linda MacIntosh, ID Certify president. "We selected
Datakey's smart cards because of their state-of-the-art information
security technology."
The state-operated ID Certify Channel Certification Authority(TM) is
expected to be up and running by January 15, 1999. Over the next two years,
10,000 certificates with Datakey smart cards are expected to be deployed.
"This deployment of smart cards represents another positive step in the
growing worldwide utilization of this technology for information security,"
said Carl Boecher, president of Datakey. "Smart cards have long been used
in Europe as debit instruments, but are finally being recognized as the
safest way to secure personal email and attachments over the Internet."
