Well, here's an update on the story I reported...

Apparently it was not the US Secret Service checking the laptops. Either I
heard incorrectly, or it was a slip of the tongue with my friend saying
"Secret Service" while thinking "Customs". In any case she is not absolutely
sure who the official was with, just assumed it was Customs. And it was at
JFK's international departures terminal, which answers Matt Blaze's
questions about flights to Ireland and about catching only international
travelers.

I am continuing to attempt to get enough information so that somebody can
provide independent verification of this story. I apologize in the meantime
for the urban-legend like character of the story so far.
