Slight modification possibly.
How about limits on consecutive terms unless there is absolutely no one who
is running against the incumbent?
For example, brother A serves, let's say, the maximum streak of 4 terms.
Does an awesome job. Brother B then runs and wins a term. Performs
substandardly. Brother A then wins back another shot at up to a 4-term streak.
Now we have a lot of the good leadership of Brother A, but with the chance for
others to serve in and learn from that position.
This rule should stimulate regions, etc. to continuously groom new leaders for
officership, as opposed to sitting back, letting one person carry that office
for years and years, and stagnate brother advancement opportunities.
Our chapter has a 2-semester limit on any office, which works well. We have
had only a few actually reach the limit, but we've had both great leaders and
those who were given the opportunity to try, and it didn't damage us.
Think about this: if a long-time leader suddenly quits or otherwise leaves
office or cannot perform, who would adequately take over if no one was
groomed or experienced?
Plus: sometimes the ideas of a long-time leader, while not being incorrect,
may be better off modified for a changing fraternity based on current need.
New members that have a chance at the office have a better chance to act upon
the newest changes in the organization.
So what do you think?
