The following is highly opinion based with little to no facts backing
it up, just experience and my own limited common sense.
I've seen a lot of arguments for moving NSD here or moving NSD there
because of conflicts with this at schools A or conflicts with that at
schools B. Guess what, no matter what you do, some group of schools
somewhere in the country are going to have a conflict with the date no
matter where you put it. It's a fact of our busy hectic lives.
Things conflict with each other, we set our priorities and choose
which we do and which we don't. The classic "the marriage is off
because it conflicts with the SuperBowl" story.
I'm not saying trying to avoid the largest number of conflicts isn't a
good thing but quite frankly I think the people who originally put NSD
on the first weekend of November probably considered such things as
sport conflicts, etc. when they originally chose it.
So in my viewpoint trying to move something that has been at the same
time for what 16 some odd years now, the question that should be asked
and answered is: If we move NSD will we gain more participation from
those who had conflicts before than we will lose from those who will
now have new conflicts. Allow me to illustrate. Tau Lambda has had
chapter meetings on Thursday evenings at 6PM as far as I know since it
came back to life in 1980. Because we were all sure that these
meetings weren't going to move, we incoporated it into our weekly
schedules. When new things came up it was one of those "oh but not
Thursdays at 6PM, I'm busy then". Occasionally some one would have a
conflict with this time, either permanently or temporarily, and the
subject would come up in conversation of moving chapter to another
time. And that's all the farther it got when it was realized that
finding a time that wouldn't result in a conflict for even more people
was very simply IMPOSSIBLE.
I would submit that moving NSD is similar to trying to move chapter.
Its been the same time for 16 years now, if moving NSD will increase
participation more than it will decrease it (since both will probably
happen), then I'm for it. But I doubt it'll be that way.
We all make our priorities. And if a football or basketball game (of
which there are many a season) is more important to a chapter than
pulling together with the rest of the fraternity on NSD (a once a year
event), then that's their priority and moving NSD isn't going to
change that. Other chapters have undoubtedly built it into their
planning schedules for the fall and don't care what else falls on that
day, its NSD and they're going to be part of something big.
These are extremes granted, but I hope I've illustrated my point.
Remember, this post was highly opinionated. :)
