New graduates wishing to become advisors can be a touchy issue.
Here are some of my ideas on the subject.
Before you do anything else, sit down and write down ideas on how you
(as a chapter,officer, brother) view what is a good advisor. Do you
want advisors to talk to the chapter each week. Do you want the advisor
to participate in your Exec Board meetings. Do you want the advisor to
give suggestion in a one on one enviroment. What is your idea Advisor?
Next what are your current advisors doing. How do they fit with your
ideals? If our current advisors are not fitting the bill. You may want
to talk to them individually. Ask them out to dinner,lunch, a drink
whatever, just get them away from the APO enviroment and talk to them to
see what they want to get out of APO as an advisor. Find ways so that
your advisors and you both get what you want from APO. Once you have
address your current advisors, then you can determine what to do for new
advisors.
Now ask the 'I want to be your advisor' person out to dinner, lunch, a
drink whatever, again just get them totally away from the APO
enviroment. Ask the person what they want to contribute as an advisor.
See what image they have of advisors.
Once you see what they want to do as an advisor you will have a better
idea of how they will act as an advisor. Next let this person know what
you consider a good advisor. See how they take the news. The big key
in this is to not make this personnal. Try to keep this a discussion on
advisors not this is what is wrong with you as an advisor.
After you both have explained your views on advisors, see where the
differences are, and how big are those differences. Now suggest to this
person maybe they should be an alumni now and in maybe a year or so see
if they want to be an advisor.
I strongly believe that new grads should not advisor their old chapters
for at least a year. People need to seperate themself from the current
group. APO chapters need to be run by the undergrads. The alumni are
just that alumni, the chapter has past to a new generation. An
advisors need to be able to seperate themselves from the chapter so they
can see the big picture.
