Just a note about Advisors

When first I joined APO back in 1990, I was inducted as a brother and then
given honor by becoming an advisor to scouting affairs. That position has
lasted to this very day mainly for two reasons. The first was that I am
Eagle Scout and being the proverbial always a Boy Scout, I was appointed to
be a liason between Muhlenberg College and the Local BSA. The second reason
was upon Graduation from Muhlenberg, the Chapter President believed I was
a valuable asset to the Chapter and very much wanted me to advise him and
future presidents about what the BSA was doing and how we could assist.
However, I should tell you all, I believe strongly that sometimes we pay alot
of attention to words when semantics just bogs us down. I believe the term
advisor could be replaced by the word "mentor" "friend" "alumni" "guide".
These words convey a much more meaningful term than just "advisor".
When I left Muhlenberg College, I attended the University of Pittsburgh.
There I was asked to be an Ex-Officio Advisor. Partly this was because
I did not know enough about the Chapter politics, but also due to my
main responsibilities as a Graduate Student. Thus, I was often asked
and gave my opinions on how to proceed, concerns, and anything I thought
might improve the chapter. I worked with 3 presidents and their
respective boards, such that when I left they gave me a card upon graduation.
and wanted me to keep in touch.
Now I am staff member, but I am still an advisor to many friends and
fellows in APO. I think we could learn a lot from each other, whether or not
the word "advisor" is meant to advise or give direction, or whether to give it
ideas, direction and strength!
