At at least one school (Carnegie Mellon) and allegedly at another (MIT,
although I have no authoratative word either way there) this list is
turned into a public newsgroup, open to anyone on the campus. It has
operated this way for at least the last 3 or 4 years, with no
complaints. What is discussed here has always been "public" information
anyway, so what difference would it make if someone wants to archive it
for us?
If the list is archived and indexed, tneh it becomes easier to find
previous postings on various topics, such as an announcement of an
upcoming event. It can also help with various discussions that regularly
resurface (every two years or so :-) by giving a perspective of what
people's views were the last time they came up.
On the downside, there is more publicity for the list, as well as the
possibility that someone might stumble across the list and spam it. I
don't really consider more publicity to be a downside (feel free to
disagree with me) and I see the spamming issue to be quite minimal. No
matter what we do, short of making the list a moderated one, will give
complete protection from spamming, and the increased publicity might make
the list known to other brothers that would not have otherwise heard of
it.
