Aside from the current all-male/co-ed debate, I would like to spin off on
another topic if I may. There was an amendment proposed by Henry Marx of
U maryland. I forget what the actual wording was, but what stands out in my
mind is a phrase he used in the rationale: "We are a fraternity of under-
graduates." As a grad student myself, and seeing at least 6 grad students in
my chapter, one of whom is pledging, I must disagree. We are a fraternity of
COLLEGE students. grad students are a minority of the active population, but
we still do exist and are a valuable asset in our chapters. Whereas the male-
female debate evokes emotion among many people on who is a brother and what
is a fraternity, the presence or lack of a BS/BA degree on somebody's wall
does not in any way, shape or form alter the meaning of brother or
fraternity,
regardless of what side of the fence you are on in the current gender debate.
Believe it or not, though I submitted a lot of amendments this year, I have
ideas for others that now must wait til '98, and this is oneof them. Unless
there is a specific school policy against grad students in student
activities,
I think that grad students may be as active as undergrads if they elect to be
so, and I am considering writing legislation in 2 years to protect that
right.
