APO is one of four big service groups on our campus (Case Western) --
there's the Office of Student Community Service, Habitat For Humanity, and
our social Greek chapters some of which have service requirements almost on
the same scale as ours.
The key to coexisting I think is that we all focus on different types of
community service. The social greeks stick to large scale, all day, week
end projects; usually going back to the same organization every time. The
Office of Student Community Service organizes larger, more expensive grant
oriented programs -- frankly they do things that we just can't. Habitat of
course does fund raising and works on their houses. Our chapter
concentrates on smaller projects (usually less than 10 people) working with
a big mix of organizations (a few dozen each year). It works better for us
not to make long term commitments.
The balance really works out. Our chapter has lots of social greeks, and
members of habitat and the Office as brothers. In fact the Habitat
program, and our Office of Student Community Service were founded by some
of the same people who worked to get our APO chapter rechartered. Tensions
build up between the groups when we start trying to do the same thing.
