As a member of a chapter that has a service requirement in hours, I will
respond to this. First off, one of the reasons that we seem to have this
requirement( a minimal 12 hours for actives, and 6 for associates) is to
keep the members that are active as in doing service to have a voice and
vote in meeting. We have set the standard so that associates aren't
required to come to meetings but actives are. All of the rules, although
they seem overbearing, really seem to have been useful. First off, by
requiring attendance at meeting the members know what is going on, and
by requiring service hours we are better able to get projects staffed.
Although all of our members do have a desire to do service and do care
some need the kick in the but to do the service, this seems to help do
that. I think that as long as enough projects are planned a semester
with enough variety, it really doesn't matter what the min. requirements
are because everyone will fulfill them.
