Once again, hello everyone,

I post, therefore I am!

Something just occurred to me...

Regarding recent debates, each one has had 2 strong viewpoints.
Either viewpoint is the opposite of the other, and in the
long-run that kind of attitude leads to a feeling of "I don't
want what the other side wants."

If both sides continue arguing exclusively for themselves, the
only way each side will be pleased is if each gets what the other
doesn't want.

The problem is, we will end up with a solution that NOBODY wants.

Some say, I don't like change.
Some say, Don't change tradition.
Some say, I need equality.
Some say, It's time to change to account for today's trends.
Some say, I don't like your solution.
Some say, I agree with that solution, but what about this one.

Others say: We should find a good compromise.

Let's try to argue for changes that benefit both sides of the
coin, rather than ones that benefit none of us.

Agreed?

RE: All-male (all-female?) chapters: Let them be that way. We
_DO_ have to keep our promise. They will change when they are
ready to change, and their own status only affects their own
chapter. Since this is a chapter-specific tradition, no other
chapter should be affected by it. Point of information, this
allows each chapter to benefit in its own way.

RE: Traditions: Let traditions be changed...for the BETTER --
If that menas adding something to the tradition, so be it. Don't
forget good traditions though -- Know what a tradition is all
about before you change it. Traditions change constantly. Good
ones will stay, bad ones will fade away, and the controversial
ones will be altered. Point of information, traditions of our
National organization affect every chapter. Therefore, as new
chapters thrive, we must keep our traditions up-to-date.

RE: The Toast Song: I'll keep this logical (not personal)
Adding the third verse will keep the other 2 verses in tact as a
part of our tradition, while the 3rd one will enrich that
tradition. It will allow more female members to breathe as easy
as us males. All female members out there who don't want to
change the Toast Song at all are pretty easy-going, but other
females need something better than that. From personal
experience, female members in my chapter have said that the
gender-specific nature of our Toast Song makes them feel uneasy,
and that hurts their status. In fact, during our Peitioning, we
came close to losing some female members because of it. It was
only with the promise (thanks to Randy) that something was being
done about it, that caused them to stay around. Many female
members that I know are not radical people & they are certainly
NOT feminists, but they just can't handle the inconsistancy.
Probably, one of the most frequently asked questions among new
female Pledges is in regards to the Toast Song's
gender-specificity. You have to admit, it doesn't help to make a
good first impression...right? In conclusion, we have to change
it. Whether we change all "men" words to "true to" words, or
whether we add the third verse, or whether we do something
completely different, we have to change it. Logically speaking,
it is inconsistent, and that gives our organization a bad image.

This has been my $0.02 worth!

L8r,
Jeremy Gagliardi
