Why are female members of APO brothers? Primarily because the female
"illegal" members who attended the '76 convention wanted to be called
 brothers.

The use of brother for all members of a co-ed Greek Letter Org. is
not unique to APO. It is also used in some professional GLOs

I think that the fact that APO ended up with 30 or more chapters admitting
women as full members "illegally" partially contributed to that. The women
who came in prior to 1974(women could be affiliate members from 1974-1976)
would have been called brothers becuase the term sister did not exist in APO.
As far as I know, the first female "illegal" brother was in 1958!

APO phillipines uses sister for their female members. I'm not sure if they
went co-ed in a more "orderly" way...

I will not go out of my way to correct any female member of APO who chooses
to call herself a "sister", she could call herself "asparagus" just as
easily. I will however explain to her the history of all members being
 brothers.

There are also college administrations (believe it or not) who insist on
a chapter using sister for its female brothers.
