June 22, 2013: Gophers line the city sidewalks in Calgary, Alberta.ReutersA
total of 650,000 civilian employees are now being furloughed at U.S. military
bases in response to sequester cuts -- but the Department of Defense
is still spending millions to protect fuzzy critters.Joint Base Lewis-McChord
(JBLM) in Washington state just received a $3.5 million department grant
to purchase land around the base in an effort to protect the
Mazama pocket gopher, a species that has not even been listed as
endangered or threatened. The expense is not sitting well with furloughed
workers."That really makes me mad that they would do that," said Matt
Hines, one of 10,000 civilian employees forced to take a 20 percent
pay cut. "I'm all for saving animals, but at what cost?"Under REPI
(Readiness and Environmental Protection Initiative), the Department of Defense
and other federal agencies have spent $397 million to protect 264,000 acres
around bases since 2003.Sarah Hamman, from the Center for National Lands
Management, has been tracking the Mazama pocket gopher in the prairie land
around JBLM and says the military's involvement has been critical."The Department
of Defense is a really important partner in this process in terms
of providing the funding and providing the land for these species," Hamman
said.In addition to the Mazama pocket gopher, environmentalists say the
purchase of 2,600 acres of prairie land around JBLM will also help
Taylor's checkers
 the gopher spending,
but he is upset about the furlough's impact on his civilian workforce."It's
frustrating after all the sacrifices these folks have made that we're asking
them to sacrifice more," he said.Hines' family is sacrificing more than
most. His wife and son are also civilian base employees. His household
is losing $1,300 a month in pay."I think when this is all
said and done, some people are going to lose their houses," said
Hines. "They're going to be in financial ruin and I just don't
think the government really, really understands that."

ages of the kidnapped children ranged from five months to 15 years,
the military said. But it was not clear which of them were
released. They are still trying to get the two rivals to release the
rest of the captives while preventing any new outbreak of fighting, Gregorio
added.Commander Hassan is a member of the Moro National Liberation Front,
a former Muslim separatist rebel group, but the feud does not involve
his organisation, the military said.Muslim clans in the southern Philippines
are well known for waging prolonged feuds, typically over land, political
power or influence. They often use armed followers to attack each other.Such
feuds in the southern Philippines, which the country's Muslim minority regard
as their homeland, claimed more than 5,500 lives and displaced thousands
between the 1930s to 2005, according to a study by the Asia
Foundation.During such feuds, the government including the military, typically
tries to negotiate for peace between rival sides rather than move to
apprehend the contending parties.

with Mary's memory every day, my whole life. And I didn't know,
nor did my mother know, that other people were living with her
memory as well," Sherman said of the aunt who died before he
was born. "And it's amazing to me today to understand that people
really did care about what happened to my aunt."Authorities will exhume
DeSalvo's remains because testing of DNA from the scene of Sullivan's rape
and murder produced a "familial match" with him, Suffolk District Attorney
Daniel Conley said. It happened after scientific advances that only became
possible recently, and after police secretly followed DeSalvo's nephew to
collect DNA from a discarded water bottle to help make the connection.Conley
said the match excludes 99.9 percent of suspects, and he expects investigators
to find an exact match when the evidence is compared directly with
DeSalvo's DNA.The district attorney stressed that the evidence only applied
to Sullivan's slaying and not the other 10 homicides."Even among experts
and law enforcement officials, there is disagreement to this day about whether
they were in fact committed by the same person," Conley said.Eleven women
between the ages of 19 and 85 were sexually assaulted and killed
in the Boston area between 1962 and 1964, crimes that terrorized the
region and grabbed national headlines.DeSalvo, a blue-collar worker and
